Volvo Construction Equipment (CE) has launched an upgraded version of its EC18 Electric mini excavator, now available with an optional straight boom. This enhancement, designed to improve indoor demolition efficiency, was developed in response to contractor feedback and offers increased reach while maintaining compact maneuverability.

The 1.8-ton EC18 Electric is powered by a 48V, 20 kWh battery, making it a zero-emission, low-noise solution for indoor and urban worksites. The addition of the straight boom increases the pin height by 10%, providing better reach for tasks such as ceiling demolition and high-wall removal, while still allowing the excavator to fit through standard doorways.

Meeting Industry Demands for Electric Demolition Equipment

With stricter emission regulations and a growing demand for sustainable construction solutions, electric compact excavators have become a game-changer in indoor demolition. Unlike traditional diesel-powered models, the EC18 Electric operates with zero emissions, significantly reducing air pollution and ensuring compliance with environmental laws. It also minimizes noise levels, making it ideal for use in hospitals, office buildings, and residential renovations, where noise restrictions are a concern.

According to Tony den Hoed, Director of Demolition Strategic Accounts at Volvo CE, the decision to introduce the straight boom was driven by customer insights.

"Contractors told us that adding a straight boom to the EC18 Electric would give them the extra height needed to reach ceilings while maintaining its compact size for easy navigation through doorways," said den Hoed. "Agility is critical in indoor demolition, and we’re committed to providing solutions that help our customers secure more jobs and improve efficiency."

Contractor Insights: Performance Without Compromise

One of the early adopters of the EC18 Electric with straight boom is Robles1, a demolition contractor based in Texas. Adam Robles, Director of Operations, highlighted how the electric excavator gives them a competitive edge.

"Most indoor demolition teams aren’t equipped with a fleet of electric excavators, but we are," said Robles. "Many electric machines tend to feel slower, but the EC18 Electric delivers both speed and power throughout the battery’s charge, making it a reliable choice for demanding demolition work."

Factory-Fitted Straight Boom Now Available

Customers can now order the EC18 Electric mini excavator with the straight boom directly from the factory, ensuring optimal performance and convenience. With the growing need for compact, emission-free solutions in urban construction, this latest upgrade positions the EC18 Electric as a versatile and powerful tool for contractors looking to enhance their indoor demolition capabilities.

For businesses seeking high-performance electric excavators with enhanced reach and agility, the Volvo EC18 Electric with a straight boom is a solution worth considering.
